Apple and the Climate Change

Apple has already made headway in the direction of sustainability. According to its Sustainability Report 2016, All of its data centers are running on renewable energy and about 93 % of all of its facilities all around the world are using renewable energy. Also, Apple is now 100% renewable in 23 countries like China, United States, Germany and Singapore. Over the past 5 years span, 64 percent of its carbon emissions are reduced.

Product Recycling:

The Environment initiatives of Apple, headed by Lisa Jackson (Former head of EPA) is finding its way to reduce its contribution to Climate change by decreasing its dependency on mining of raw materials for Gold, Aluminium. About $40 million worth of Gold was re-used from old devices last year at Apple.

Apple's line of robots LIAM can disassemble an iPhone every 11 seconds which accounts for 1.4 million phones a year and sort its high-quality components so they can be recycled, reducing the need to mine those resources from the earth.

Apple in its new environment report proposed that, it will make use of only recycled materials to build its next generation of products.  In 2015, Apple collected nearly 90 million pounds of e-waste through their recycling programs.

All of Apple's data centers are running on renewable energy and about 93 % of all of its facilities all around the world are using renewable energy.

Apple is building a new headquarters 'APPLE PARK' which is going to open soon. This HQ was built with more sustainability enriching technologies. Some of the key environmental friendly aspects of Apple Park are:

  • The building will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy, generated by 4 megawatts of baseload biogas fuel cells and 16 megawatts of rooftop solar—one of the largest onsite corporate solar energy installations in the world.
  • 80 percent of the site will be so-called "green space" while the main building will go without air conditioning or heating for 75 percent of the year thanks to natural ventilation.

  • About 157,000 gallons of recycled water from the city of Sunnyvale’s recycling facility will be used for the majority of the Apple park's landscaping water needs.
